If Your Home Is Damaged by a Storm or Hurricane, Document the Damage Right Away

If your residential house is damaged in a storm, there are certain actions you should take.

1. Take A Lot of Photographs Showing All Damage

Wherever you see any damage (even if uncertain) take photographs with good camera or phone. Take as many photographs as you can of close ups of the damage and from a distance. You should only start taking photographs when it is safe to do so. Photographs of the damage right after the storm are great. Please remember that over the next few days and even weeks, more damage may appear. For example, water can travel fast and wide distances one it has successfully penetrated your home. Lastly, don’t forget to take photographs of any damage to your personal property (i.e., furniture, clothing, etc.).

2. Videos Can Be Helpful

If your home has a leak, you can also take videos of the damage of the water dripping, etc. to show the damage. If you are taking a video, make sure you state the time and date of the video.
